Although born in Australia, at the age of 3, his parents moved back to war-torn Lebanon where Houssam grew up. At the age of 18 he moved back to Australia with his family where he spent his adult life.He graduated with a double degree in Health Sciences - Biomedical Engineering and first found success as an entrepreneur in business before switching to politics. In 2010, he was elected to the City of Adelaide and is the first Muslim to hold a Deputy Lord Mayoral Office in Australia.
